According to a report by Swedish provider of telecoms and data communication systems, Ericsson, global mobile penetration has reached 85% in the fourth quarter of 2011 and mobile subscriptions totalled around 6 billion. Mobile subscriptions increased by around 13% year-on-year and 3% quarter-on-quarter. Around 30% of all handsets sold in 2011 were smartphones, compared to around 20% in 2010. However, smartphones account for only around 10% of the worldwide installed base of subscriptions, which suggest there is still considerable room for further uptake, Ericsson said.
