German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told journalists in Dubai that he did not consider Germany companies at any disadvantage in competing for business in Iraq, despite his country's opposition to the US-led war earlier this year.

'We have already given humanitarian aid to Iraq,' he said. 'We are willing to support the reconstruction process and the German training of Iraqi security forces is under discussion, possibly in the UAE.

'I am not under the impression that our position on the war has had a negative effect on business. We did not consider this as a factor in deciding our position which was based on other important issues'.

Speaking during a brief regional tour taking in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Herr Schroeder repeated his condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Israel and of the Israeli attack on Syria this week. He said that the region needed to get back on to the Road Map for Peace.

'I am enormously impressed by the economic dynamism of Dubai,' he added later. 'And I am sure that many German companies know the value of committing themselves to this market where we already enjoy huge exports.'

Then Herr Schroeder left the press conference to inaugurate the new Siemens Middle East headquarters in the Dubai Internet City.
