The phone has caused a stir among the technology sector, as it far exceeds the capabilities of any cameras built into smartphones. However, the phone itself has been launched as part of Nokia's old Symbian range.
The majority of Nokia's new smartphones, such as the NokiaLumia 800, feature Windows Phone 7, but Pureview has been questionably launched under the much maligned Symbian banner. The device has prompted other questions as well.
Nokia Pureview uses the Symbian operating system
"The Nokia 808 PureView is a fantastic talking point with a 41 megapixel camera however taking pictures in 41 megapixels would mean that you need a huge memory card as image file sizes would be very large. Nokia has probably introduced this product to differentiate itself from the competition but the main drawback at this stage is that this isn't a Windows Phone powered device but rather running on Sybmian Belle," Ashish Panjabi, COO at Jacky's Electronics tells AMEinfo.
Aside from the hugely impressive camera, the phone also features Dolby headphone technology, a our inch screen and a single core 1.3Ghz processor.
Nokia faces critical year
This launch marks Nokia's latest attempt to get a firm foothold in the smartphone market. The Finnish company has a lot riding on the success of its recent launches, and those to come in the near future. "Nokia is at a stage where they're making a major come back and this will be a critical year for them because they can't afford to fail at this stage. Nokia's failing in 2012 would also mean that Microsoft would struggle in their efforts to make Windows Phone a successful mobile operating system," says Panjabi.
