The device has a quad-core chip, the A5X and was described by Apple's Phil Schiller as a 'graphics powerhouse'.
"This is the best mobile display that has ever shipped, and it is a real revolution," said Schiller.
New iPad has 4G LTE connection
The device has a 4G LTE connection, offering up to 73Mbps download speeds. Details of which have only been revealed for the US, but Apple has claimed that despite the increased wireless connection speed, the tablet will be able to run for nine hours on a 4G connection.
Another new feature on the iPad is the camera, which records video in 1080 pixels and has a 5 megapixel sensor. Voice dictation is another new offering in the device. Translation of speech into words is available in English, French, German and Japanese initially.
New iPad is available March 16th in US
The device is available for pre-order in the US now for a March 16th launch and will cost between $499 and $829, depending on storage size and connection. No launch date or pricing for the Middle East is available currently.
Apple revealed in its presentation that it sold more than 15million iPads in the last quarter of 2011, more than any other PC vendor sold PCs. The firm also said that over 200,000 apps have now been designed specifically for the iPad.
The company has also announced the launch of a new version of its digital media receiver device Apple TV, which now supports 1080p and has a slicker interface. The Apple Genius feature will also be incorporated into Apple TV.
