  • United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, October 15 - 2003 at 13:41
  • PRESS RELEASE

IBM's 'ThinkPad University Fly-In' regional mobile education conference is set to be held in the UAE for the second time on the 18th October, when the UAE's Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) hosts the two-day event.

The conference is expected to attract over 150 delegates from educational institutions and authorities around Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and is scheduled to be led by a keynote address from His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Chancellor of HCT and President of Zayed University.

"We're delighted to be bringing this event to the UAE once again," said IBM Middle East, Egypt and Pakistan General Manager, Samer Shaar. "HCT's work on deploying and using laptop computers to drive educational opportunities has been groundbreaking and of tremendous value to students. Other members of IBM's ThinkPad University Program, such as Zayed University and others from around the region, will be sharing experiences, practice and new approaches at the Fly-In.'

The conference consists of keynote and plenary sessions interspersed with four breakout sessions including 22 presentations that give educationalists a chance to explore a number of topics related to technology in education. Speakers in the plenary sessions are set to include Dubai Women's College Director, Dr. Howard Reed, Zayed University Vice President Dr. Hanif Al Qassimi and Provost Dr; Larry Wilson and IBM's General Manager, Middle East, Dr. Samer Shaar. Plenary and breakout sessions will also include case studies presented by representatives from educational sector organisations in the USA, Germany and Mexico, as well as the UAE. Technology industry participation includes representatives of IBM, Cisco, Intel, Epson, VTME, Sony and Microsoft.

"Technology helps young people to access information and learn dynamically using their own resources. Mobile technology helps educators to build project teams, assign tasks to different groups and allows students to work in a variety of environments and ways to gain new and powerful benefits from the educational experience," said Sameh Farid, regional manager of Personal Computing Division IBM Middle East, Egypt & Pakistan. "We're delighted to be able to take a role in driving this important experience-sharing forum, particularly as the event is hosted at a leading e-education venue, DWC."

Dubai Women's College, which is to be the base for the two-day conference, is currently in the fourth year of its laptop initiative, which started with 220 equipped students. Today, all 2,000 students at the College use laptop computers in an environment adapted for mobile computing, with laptop-equipped workstations in all rooms and centralised IT facilities adapted specifically to support mobile computing. The initiative has supported a move to project-based learning which currently forms some 70% of the curriculum at the college. The initiative has been recognised in global case studies both by Intel and by IBM.
