- United Arab Emirates: Sunday, October 19 - 2003 at 12:52
- PRESS RELEASE
Microsoft is bringing enhanced mobile computing to the region, with the Middle East launch today of Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PCs at Gitex 2003.
Among the improvements made for Windows Mobile 2003 is support for wireless networking, to take advantage of the wi-fi boom, enhanced and expanded multimedia functions and improved support for developers, to enable them to create more applications for Pocket PC more quickly and easily.
"Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs creates new opportunities for hardware, software and wireless companies to partner and deliver innovative solutions to help improve the way people work and live," said Mohammed Gawdat, Regional Manager of Communications Sector, Microsoft Middle East & Africa. "By improving the core elements of Windows Mobile software, Microsoft has enabled customers to take advantage of software features that are wireless ready and easy to use, and to connect with people and information with a broader range of new device hardware, at attractive prices."
Microsoft is launching Windows Mobile 2003 at this year's Gitex Exhibition, and has a dedicated mobility display on its stand at the show, where visitors can see hardware powered by Windows Mobile 2003 from a range of vendors.
One of the key enhancements to Windows Mobile 2003 is improved connectivity. The operating system has automatic detection and connection for wi-fi networks, and native support for Bluetooth. Automatic always-on email synchronization will be possible through integration with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
For multimedia, Windows Media 9 series offers more functions for accessing audio, video and digital images through a mobile device, including playback of a wider range of digital media formats and support for home movies and digital photo albums created with Windows Movie Maker 2 and Plus! Photo Story.
To help encourage the development of more and more mobile applications, Windows Mobile 2003 has integrated support for Microsoft .NET Compact Framework, which will allow Visual Studio application developers to create mobile applications and web services using their usual development skills. By making application development quicker and easier, Microsoft hopes to drive more business usage of Pocket PC.
"Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs continue to generate increased interest from users and developers alike," explained Gawdat "The community of Windows Mobile developers selling Pocket PC applications has nearly doubled, and has grown by 95% in the first quarter of 2003, compared to the first quarter of 2002. Pocket PC sales are up 67% from the first quarter of 2002, and by making it easier for developers to make innovative applications we hope to continue to grow this market."
