Canon launches world's first ultra-slim, ultra hi-res film scanner
- United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, October 22 - 2003 at 11:20
- PRESS RELEASE
GITEX 2003 saw the Middle East debut of the world's first CIS (Contact Image Sensor) scanner that can scan documents or films at up to 2400x4800dpi — the ultra-slim new CanoScan LiDE 80 Color Image Scanner.
"Canon's LiDE technology makes scanners easier to use, more reliable and more accurate. The new LiDE 80 is the flagship of our slim-line LiDE range, giving customers the great performance of previous LiDE scanners, but now with the ability to scan films and transparencies," said Michel Sabbagh, Marketing Manager of Canon Middle East.
The LiDE (LED InDirect Exposure) scanners use a small, low powered LED light source with the lens elements integrated directly on the scanning sensor to substantially reduce the number and size of individual components.
This scanner is the first CIS scanner in the world with up to 2400 x 4800 dpi for high resolution scanning. Single-pass scanning technology and 48-bit color (both input and output) provide both fast and detailed scans with smooth gradation and more than 281 trillion possible colors. It will also be the world's first film capable bus-powered CIS scanner on the market. The LiDE 80 comes with a film adapter unit (FAU) as a no-cost standard accessory that allows the user to scan a 35mm un-mounted frame (positive or negative) at up to 2400 x 4800 dpi.
The scanner also is the first CIS scanner to use Canon's exclusive Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement (FARE™ Level 2). This is the next generation of Canon's built-in automatic retouching technology that has previously only been featured on CCD scanners. This technology builds on Canon's previous FARE dust and scratch removal benefits and adds two additional features - Grain correction and Fading correction - for more productivity and even better quality of scans. FARE Level 2 helps deliver high quality scans from damaged originals and increases support for Kodachrome film. The Fading correction feature examines originals with faded color and intelligently rebuilds color quality, for example saturation where required, restoring the image to its near original pre-faded color balance.
Additional advantages of the LiDE 80 include one cable for USB 2.0 Hi-Speed* connection and power, the Z-Lid™ expansion top, four one-touch buttons and the Multi-Scan Mode. Consumers will deal with less clutter when using the one USB cable included with the scanner to both power the unit and connect it to the computer. USB 2.0 Hi-Speed will deliver preview scans in less than 10 seconds by using fast transfer rates of up to 480Mbps. Canon's exclusive Z-Lid expansion top lifts approximately one inch and stays flat for scanning thick books and magazines. The super slim design is just over one-and-a-half inches high, and with the scanner stand included, users can scan and store the scanner on its side to save space.
Canon's four-button design — copy, scan, file and e-mail — helps users expedite common scanning tasks with single-touch simplicity. In addition to the default settings from Canon, each button can be customized to perform the tasks most often used by the consumer. The Multi-Scan mode helps save time by scanning multiple images at one time, saving each image to its own file for archiving or editing. The unit also scans multi-page documents to a single PDF file.
