  • PRESS RELEASE

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing's (DTCM) initiative with the Lufthansa has yielded positive results as the German airline's inaugural flight between Munich - Dubai landed at the Dubai International Airport on Monday, 27th October 2003.

The debut flight had a number of high-ranking Lufthansa officials as well as ten journalists from leading German daily newspapers and travel and trade publications. During the tour, the media group expressed their fascination with the Dubai's state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities.

Attending a three-day meeting arranged for the Lufthansa delegates, DTCM Manager Missions, Mr. Hamad bin Mejren, said that the start of the Munich-Dubai flight was the result of the department's hard work and dedication over a period of time. This development has opened another significant chapter of co-operation and long-term relations in the field of tourism and trade. "Europe is our target source market and Germany holds immense importance for us. Munich is Germany's third biggest city with the country's second biggest number of working people. It is also Germany's leading centre of high-tech and media industry. An air link with Munich is bound to have a very highly productive outcome for Dubai's tourism industry and other economic sectors," said Mr. bin Mejren.

Appreciating the efforts of DTCM Germany office, Mr. bin Mejren said: "Our representative office in Frankfurt has done a remarkable job in attracting Lufthansa and convincing them that Dubai is the most promising market in the region".

Lufthansa is one of the world's biggest and prestigious airlines and an aviation group with a network of more than 400 subsidiaries around the globe. These companies are either airlines or service companies operating in the logistics, MRO, catering, IT, and leisure travel business areas.

"Our involvement with such an enormous organization will guarantee useful and far-reaching results for Dubai," said Mr. bin Mejren.
Top Lufthansa officials visited Dubai during various events like Arabian Travel Market (ATM-2003). A Lufthansa team comprising of 120 of its top management team members from across the world visited Dubai early this year for major conference of the company. The decision to start the Munich-Dubai direct flight was announced during the meeting the delegation had with the DTCM Director General, Mr. Khalid A bin Sulayem.

Lufthansa will operate Dubai-Munich flight five times a week. The 75-year-old airliner currently operates direct flights to Frankfurt
and its service to Munich, Germany's second busiest hub, is going to fulfill the long-felt needs of the travelers. With a 41-year history in the region, the airline operates 60 weekly flights linking 16 Middle East destinations to Germany. It operates over 30 flights out of the Gulf region, including 11 out of the UAE.
