AME Info.com has a bigger daily audience than many local newspapers in the Middle East. How did this local dot-com success story start out?

AME Info FZ-LLC operates the Middle East's largest English language website with around 45,000 Internet users visiting the website every day, a figure bigger than the circulation of many regional newspapers.

The website specializes in business news and information from its well-appointed headquarters in the Dubai Media City overlooking The Palm Jumeirah.

But the company started as a modest importer of frozen chickens back in 1991 and was founded by present Chairman Saif bin Nasser Al Suwaidi, a prominent Abu Dhabi businessman, and CEO Klaus Lovgreen.

It evolved into a technology company in the late 1990s, publishing first a business directory on a CD and moving onto the Internet fully in 1999 although its website was established in 1996.

AME Info.com was initially a business resource with a directory and events calendar, supplemented by a compilation of regional press releases. That changed in the autumn of 2000 when independent newswires were added, along with business magazine content.

The rapid growth of the Internet and a focus on business news and content, brought success in winning commercial clients and the website now boasts a line-up of blue-chip advertisers and sponsors from financial giants like HSBC and Credit Suisse, global media house CNN, through to the big names in IT and many local firms.

Extremely competitive advertising and sponsorship rates have underpinned this commercial support. For the cost of taking a half-page advert in Gulf News, for example, a company can sponsor a section on AME Info for 356 days.

This year AME Info has completely changed its technology platform. The MyAMEInfo.com service allows users to register, free-of-charge like all AME Info services, and then to personalize their news service. They can choose to receive email alerts whenever an article appears on a particular company, or in a particular section of the website, for example.

The result of this technology has been a very significant increase in traffic to the AME Info website which has taken its information page views way above anything achieved by any other English-language website in the Middle East, according to the Alexa.com independent website rankings (visit www.alexa.com).

AME Info therefore looks forward confidently to the future and will be becoming more involved in the local community in the coming year, particularly through the sponsorship of events and, of course, through the continuing development of innovative business news and information services.
