  • PRESS RELEASE

Following the unprecedented success of two sold out Craig David Concerts, Mirage Promotions & Buzz Productions in conjunction with Gulf Air are pleased to be bringing to Dubai the world's most spectacular show Michael Flatley's Lord of The Dance.

"During the last few years we have taken 'Lord of the Dance' all over the world and entertained many millions of people", said Michael Flatley, the creator or Lord of the Dance, in a statement read by the organizers at the press conference. "The show is a magnet for people everywhere. It breaks down every kind of barrier: music and dance have no language difficulties to overcome. They deliver the message straight to the heart. There has always been an air of excitement about Dubai. A thriving tourist city with guaranteed sunshine. A land full of atmospheric alleyways and markets overflowing with promise and expectation. And one I would love to explore. So I am absolutely thrilled that we have been invited to perform Lord of the Dance there - and excited at the prospect. It is a great opportunity".

"Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance is musical dance extravaganza that has been enjoyed by millions all over the world. It is our pleasure to bring to Dubai a new standard of world-class entertainment" commented Thomas Ovesen, General Manager, Mirage Promotions UAE.

World class standards indeed, as all tickets will be booked through an online interface for the first time, enabling fans to select and purchase a unique ticket number relating to a specific seat location. In addition there will be four different ticket categories to ensure a wide selection of tickets is available to suit all budgets and to encourage families and groups to enjoy this spectacular event.

Gulf Air, presenters of the show in conjunction with Mirage Promotions & Buzz Productions, have found synergies between the fore-taste of Arabian hospitality and culture and this dynamic record-breaking show. "Gulf Air's strong geographic, historic and cultural links in the region coupled with our Arabian values and rich traditions will ensure that everyone involved in the show will experience the warmth and hospitality of the Gulf throughout their experience in the region," said James Harrison, the airline's Dubai Manager.

"Furthermore we are delighted to be able to bring such a special, high calibre production to Dubai. Michael Flatley tells us it is a dynamic, high energy, show which cuts across all audiences and cultural boundaries - which mirrors the attributes of Gulf Air, as we successfully continue our rebuilding programme. "

The shows, which are part of the official DSF 2004 calendar, will take place on 27th, 28th and 29th January 2004 at the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai's most prestigious indoor venue with a seated capacity of 4,500 each night - including a Charity Gala on the 27th with a percentage of proceeds going to Al Noor Charity. "Al Noor relies on fundraising to meet the ever-increasing costs of caring for special needs children," explained Amna Dabbagh, Al Noor's Fundraising Chairperson. "The actual cost of caring for each child is estimated at more than 20,000 Dirhams a year and neither the fees nor the individual sponsorships come close to meeting this cost. With such a prestigious event, we hope to raise public awareness of Al Noor and encourage people to support a very worthy cause."

The event is supported by:
Areej, Budget Car Rental, Emirates Radio 2, Orbit, Virgin Megastore
Official Hotel: The Grand Hyatt Dubai.

On July 2nd, 1996 Michael Flatley premiered Lord Of The Dance at the Point Theatre in Dublin and the world has never quite been the same since - by the end of the evening the show had received several standing ovations and such supreme critical praise that it was to become the most talked about, the most written about and the most acclaimed show in musical history.

Written, devised, produced and choreographed by Michael Flatley, the show was established as the highest grossing international tour of the year setting new records for live performances and video sales all over the world within months of its opening. To date the show has sold in excess of 10 million CDs, videos and DVDs and the soundtrack album has received Gold and Silver Discs for sales in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In the spring of 1997, the show played 13 consecutive sell-out shows at the prestigious Radio City Music Hall in New York; and made a scintillating appearance at the 71st Academy Awards Ceremony in Hollywood before a global television audiences estimated at over 2.5 billion. The show later played a four-week sell-out season in London at the Coliseum Theatre followed, in 1998, by a record-making 21 consecutive sell-out shows at London's Wembley Arena - a feat for which it still holds the record.

Lord Of the Dance has subsequently out sold all other major shows across the globe. To date it has been seen by over 50 million people in 36 different countries from Russia, Hungary, Slovakia, Japan, across North America and Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, Australia and the Pacific Rim, Lebanon, and throughout Europe, on each of the five continents.

For the last seven years it has been recognized as the world's highest grossing dance show every single year, garnering in excess of $400,000,000 worth of global ticket sales.

While Flatley went off to stage, he retained his artistic control over the show and launched it on an assured and successful future. It has gone from strength to strength. There are currently three troupes touring with Lord Of The Dance. Troupe One performs in Europe while Troupe Two consistently tours the USA where it is seen by an annual audience of 300,000. Troupe Three opened a five year long residency at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas in November 2002 where it is estimated it will play to over 400,000 each year.
