Caravan Malaysia 2003 to be held at Expo Centre Sharjah

The last leg of Caravan Malaysia 2003, a series of exhibitions organised by the Malaysian government in the Arabian Gulf, will be held at Expo Centre Sharjah from 20 to 24 December 2003.

Organised under the theme of 'Discover our Treasure' by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the exhibition is no ordinary showcase of Malaysian products but an entire concept being brought to the Gulf consumers and traders.

Speaking at a press conference organised on Tuesday, 16th December 2003 at Expo Centre Sharjah, Mr Mohammed Mustafa Abdul Aziz, Consul General of Malaysia said, 'Caravan Malaysia 2003 is a concerted effort by the Malaysian government to enhance and promote bilateral trade between Malaysia and the Gulf region.

'Our hi-end products on show will be displayed in their functional environments. The showcase is a unique concept where all products utilised for stand construction including carpets, flooring, furniture and accessories will be Made in Malaysia.'

Speaking on Expo Centre Sharjah's long-term objective, Mr. Mohammed Salem Al Mosharrekh, Board Member of Expo Centre Sharjah said, 'In line with our long-term objective of fostering stronger economic and diplomatic ties between the UAE and other economies of the world, we are proud to host Caravan Malaysia 2003 at Expo Centre Sharjah. The exhibition promises to be different from most shows in the UAE, as it will promote a concept and will mainly focus on lifestyle.'

Mr. Fasahat Ali Khan, Deputy Director General of Expo Centre Sharjah said, 'Thanks to sound macroeconomic policies, Malaysia has enjoyed three decades of relatively uninterrupted economic growth and increasing diversification from an early reliance on tin, rubber and palm oil into highly developed manufacturing and services sectors. Caravan Malaysia 2003 brings to Sharjah a wide range of high quality products from Malaysia, offering an excellent opportunity for regional businessmen and the public alike to capitalise on Malaysia's manufacturing excellence.

'Hosting this show,' continued Mr. Khan, 'is the renewal of our long-standing relation with Malaysia, and the beginning of a mutually rewarding and enduring partnership for both our governments.'

Covering a space of 4,000 square meters, the 5 day event will showcase a wide range of products and services. Included will be the latest digital entertainment technology and smart home gadgets including cars and buses.

The exhibition will emphasize on quality, style, innovation, technology and functionality of the products. It will cover sectors such as electrical and electronics, automotive and transportation, ICT, rubber, food and agriculture, furniture, building and construction, handicraft, plastics, education, healthcare and hospital services, telecommunications, wood products etc.

A special section of the show will be dedicated to Malaysian Brand Names, where the leading Malaysian brands will be highlighted in a multimedia format.

The exhibition will also act as a window to Malaysia's rich culture, with daily cultural performances, handicraft demonstrations and other presentations offering a taste of Malaysian culture to visitors.

The show will be open everyday from 20 to 24 December 2003, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm to traders and from 4.30 pm to 9.30 pm to the general public and trade.

BILATERAL TRADE BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND UAE

* Bilateral trade between Malaysia and UAE has seen sizable growth in the past 8 years (1995-2002). In 1995, Malaysia's total trade with UAE amounted to USD 475.96 million and has increased by 107.81% to USD 989.08 million in 2002.


* As for Malaysia's exports to UAE, in 1995 it amounted to USD 452.17 million and increased by 89.86% to USD 858.48 million in 2002, while imports from Malaysia to UAE increased by 449.20%, from USD 23.78 million in 1995 to USD 130.60 million in 2002.


* Malaysia's main exports to the UAE comprised machinery and transport equipment, miscellaneous manufactured articles, animal & vegetable oils, fats & waxes, etc. while Malaysia's main imports from the UAE comprised mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, crude materials, inedible fuels, machinery and transport equipment etc.
