Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., one of the world's leading healthcare companies, hosted its Second Middle East Oncology Meeting in Dubai, UAE on January 14th and 15th.

Experts in the field of Oncology attended and provided insightful new information on the latest innovations and developments in Oncology, the study and treatment of cancer.

More than 400 leading doctors from around 21 countries attended the conference from the Middle East, North Africa, South East Asia and South Africa. The main focus of the meeting was on the development and research of drugs affecting cancer.

"Breast cancer strikes more women than any other type of cancer. Approximately 1.2 million women worldwide were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. We at Roche are committed to cancer patients and to the professionals who treat them." said Ekkehard Betsch, General Manager Middle East, Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. "We realise the importance of continuing to invest in new ways to treat people with this disease and are devoted to ensuring that we inform doctors in the region of the latest developments and treatments in breast cancer."

Within the last five years Roche has become the world's leading provider of anti-cancer treatments. Roche's Oncology portfolio includes a combination of proven products and new innovative ones. The portfolio includes three breakthrough products: Herceptin®, MabThera® and Xeloda®, which all treat a range of malignancies including breast cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and colorectal cancer. All three products are revolutionary and offer increased survival benefit.

As a world leader in oncology, Roche continues to test and research new products such as Avastin®, a protein that is believed to play an important role in tumor angiogenesis. Avastin interferes with the blood supply to tumors, thereby inhibiting tumor growth and potentially leading to tumor regression. Bondronat®, significantly reduces the incidence of cancer related bone complications and reduces bone pain in patients with breast cancer, is another example of Roche's continual innovation.

Product Background
Xeloda ® (capecitabine)
Xeloda is an effective new oral chemotherapy that was introduced as a way to target the cancer-killing agent straight into the cancer. It targets where needed and has less effect on healthy cells in the body for example: cells responsible for hair growth. Xeloda tablets improve the daily lives of women with breast cancer by giving them the freedom to live their lives, avoid problems with i.v. lines and take their treatment at home. In addition., Xeloda is among the very few agents that has demonstrated a survival benefit, and extraordinary tumour control rates, in women with breast cancer that has spread. Xeloda is prescribed for treatment of colon, rectal or breast cancer.

Herceptin® (trastuzumab)
Herceptin is the first monoclonal antibody (MAb) designed to target and block the function of HER2, a protein found in excessive amounts on the surface of some breast cancer cells. It is the first therapy to target a gene that plays a role in the actual development of the cancer and most importantly, recent findings suggest that it results in significant benefits when compared to standard treatment.

MabThera® (rituximab)
MabThera is the world's first licensed monoclonal antibody therapy for the targeted treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). More than 85% of all NHLs are derived from B-cells. Unlike many traditional forms of treatment, MabThera specifically targets B-cells. Patients treated with MabThera are disease free for longer as opposed to chemotherapy where patients relapse eventually

Recormon® (epoetin beta)
Recormon is used to treat anaemia in cancer patients. Anaemia, an abnormal low red blood cell count is a frequent complication in patients with cancer. In fact, 30-40% of patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are anaemic at diagnosis and 70% are anaemic during chemotherapy. Recormon has significantly improved the outlook for people with cancer-related anaemia by rapidly increasing red blood cell production within just a few days of treatment.
