Mercator's NOMAD keeps track of wandering containers
- United Arab Emirates: Monday, February 11 - 2002 at 09:34
- PRESS RELEASE
A new Internet system to manage the complex task of tracking aircraft freight and baggage containers as they travel the world's airways was unveiled this week in Paris by Mercator, the Information Technology division of the Dubai-based Emirates Group.
The system, named NOMAD, is tailored to the needs of both passenger and cargo airlines, as well as Ground Handling Agents and airports.
Aim is to ensure that stocks of containers or 'Unit Load Devices' of the right type, quantity and quality are in the right place, at the right time, and at the right cost.
NOMAD also offers advanced inventory, stock control and messaging functionality, damage and repair tracking modules, interline loaning modules and Management Information System tools.
Mercator presented its new solution in Paris, at this year's IATA Global Cargo Forum, where the world's major airlines met to discuss the latest challenges in the industry.
Hugh Pride, Director Information Technology for Mercator, said: "NOMAD gives airlines and handling agents much tighter control over containers, and new functionality.
"It embodies what Mercator is all about -- devising innovative and creative solutions on behalf of the aviation industry. Airlines using NOMAD will cure the headaches of managing containers at a stroke."
Thanks to this effective management system, real-time ULD tracking around the world becomes much simpler: streamlining operations, improving efficiency, cutting costs and providing maximum control of containers.
Handling agents managing containers at airports on behalf of a number of airlines can offer customers radically enhanced service and improved ULD tracking and management, giving them a real competitive edge.
NOMAD was recently implemented at Emirates and SriLankan Airlines. Emirates' Airport Services Manager Clive Clemson says: "It's made us quicker and slicker, and revolutionised the way we work. We can sum up our ULD situation at a glance, and take action before problems develop. As a result, we are reaping major benefits."
