Part of an updated line of ThinkPad notebook computers, the new ThinkPad R50 is available in 350mm and 400 mm (14 and 15-inch) models, has a travel weight of less than six pounds and measures 3.3 cm thin (1.3 inches).
The Hard Disk Active Protection System is a patented hardware and software solution from IBM that dramatically reduces hard drive failures by avoiding full-induced system damage. It incorporates a motion detector, or 'accelerometer', on the system board that senses movements that could potentially cause system damage (same technology that is used for automobile airbags) and interprets signals from the accelerometer and signals the hard drive to temporarily park the drive head when motion or vibration of the notebook is detected.
'IBM is committed to providing our customers with the most reliable notebooks in the industry and the ThinkPad R50 meets the region's SMB requirements of cutting edge technology and affordability. With the SMB market facing limited IT resources and taking a more rigorous approach to their IT needs, technologies such as the IBM Active Protection System, the IBM Rapid Restore and the Embedded Security Subsystem have been incorporated into the machine to reflect the growing need for robust, secure machines while minimizing the time and resources required to manage PCs,' said Sameh Farid, regional manager of personal computing division, IBM Middle East, Egypt and Pakistan.
Features of the ThinkPad R50 include a long-life battery where a second system battery option allows customers can achieve almost 10 hours of battery life, providing them with a truly mobile computing experience. Select ThinkPad R50 models are available with Intel Centrino Mobile Technology or with integrated IBM 802.11 a/b/g wireless, as well as the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem which when used with industry-standard wireless encryption, provide the most secure wireless computing environment in the world.
