Senior regional appointment at HSBC

HSBC has announced the appointment of Matthew Smith as Regional Chief Operating Officer for HSBC Bank Middle East Limited with effect from 1 March 2004.

Mr Smith succeeds Steve Freeman, who is moving to a senior position in the UK.

Mr Smith has previous experience of the Middle East with HSBC, most recently as Chief Executive Officer in Qatar. He has worked for the HSBC Group for 20 years in a wide range of countries including Malaysia, Oman, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Brunei, Mauritius and UK. His experience covers commercial credit, personal banking, branch management, human resources and training.

"Strength, experience and continuity are key characteristics of HSBC. Matthew's experience in the Middle East and his achievements in Qatar over the past 4 years make him well qualified for this regional appointment.," commented David Hodgkinson, Deputy Chairman, HSBC Bank Middle East Limited.
