  • PRESS RELEASE

The Dubai International Arbitration Centre has just launched the first issue of the 'DIAC journal - Arbitration in the Middle East', a quarterly journal dedicated to international commercial arbitration.

The journal provides information on the development of the rules and laws governing commercial arbitration in the Arab countries, with the objective to present the Arab countries' stance on international commercial arbitration.

"This English-Arabic journal comes as part of the DIAC's initiative towards providing a better level of services to its members and the international legal and business communities" commented Mr. Abdul Rahman Ghanim Al Mutaiwee, the Director General of the DCCI. He continued "In keeping with its new strategy, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry proudly recognizes DIAC's autonomy and supports the role it plays in providing dispute resolution services to the regional and international markets".

Dr. Hussam Al Talhuni, the Director of DIAC stated that there is a lack of information and too few publications in English covering the Arab countries' stance on arbitration, which "ultimately leads to international researchers making minor references to the development of arbitration laws and rules in Arab countries, looking at it in a manner which contradicts reality or even worse, by overlooking it entirely" said Dr. Al Talhuni. He explained that with the aim to change this, the journal will be distributed to specialized and interested practitioners of commercial arbitration worldwide.

The Dubai International Arbitration Centre was launched by the DCCI in May 2003. Initially established in 1994 by the DCCI as the Centre for Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration, it was based on a resolution issued by DCCI's board of directors under law No. (2) of 1975. The launch initiative was adopted according to the directives of HH General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum - Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence - to establish a specialised centre to provide conciliation and arbitration services to local, regional and international businesses.
