U.S. Robotics predicts Jordan wireless boom

Changes to the regulatory rules governing the installation and use of wireless networks will drive a mini-boom in Wi-Fi networking in the Jordan market, according to U.S. Robotics' director of sales, EMEA, Peter Blampied.

The new regulations, passed (October 2003) by Jordan's TRC (Telecommunications Regulatory Commission) are currently in effect. The new regulations require private WLAN users to only sign a Commitment Form, whereas public WLAN deployments, offering service to the public need to be registered at the TRC.

Previous regulations required companies to pay an annual fee of JD 15 ($22) per access point, which was costly and prevented most companies from considering wireless networking. Now, Jordanian organisations are free to install wireless networks for no fee, as long as the equipment has been type approved and registered by the TRC.

"This positive move forward shows that TRC is actively opening up the market in new ways," said Blampied. "It is important that these companies drive efficiencies, reduce costs and build competitive advantage. The new regulatory environment removes an important barrier for those wanting to benefit from the mobility and flexibility of wireless networks," he added.

According to research from IBM and the Meta Group, over 90 percent of companies plan to deploy mobile solutions by 2005. In Europe, that same percentage of companies plan to exploit the benefits of wireless networking. Wireless networks support flexibility in the deployment of technology resources and eliminate the need for expensive and unreliable cabling.

"Jordan is a significant regional ICT player and there are a number of important national technology development initiatives underway. This move is consistent with that focus on growing and developing technology markets and opportunities," said Blampied.
