Shell scores maximum points at Bahrain Grand Prix for its bitumen technology
- Bahrain: Thursday, April 01 - 2004 at 13:17
- PRESS RELEASE
All Formula One cars in the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix will be running on Shell. Literally.
Having to stand up to desert temperatures, the bitumen needs to remain stable between 20 and 50°C and still resist the enormous cornering forces of a Formula One car. The surface needs to be hard to ensure it lasts over the years but must also retain a measure of elasticity to allow for expansion and contraction in the heat.
As Bahrain is the first F1 circuit to be built in the region, Shell flew in F1 track experts from its Singapore operations to supervise the mixing of the additive - Kariphalt - with the bitumen baseas well as the laying and extensive testing of the track.
Shell's bitumen technology is also used at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany and the Ferrari test track at Fiorano, Italy.
Shell's association with F1 dates back several decades and the company has gained considerable expertise in developing custom-made products for the sport, not least for its F1 partner, Ferrari.
Shell's role in its partnership with Ferrari extends from the formulation and global supply of fuel and oil to providing crucial input into the development of new engines. Ferrari will continue to use Shell V-Power F1ULG58 fuel in Bahrain as well as Shell Helix F1SL785 for the engine and Shell Spirax F1L5361 for the gearbox.
Shell also contributes a mobile laboratory which is used to examine residues and emissions at every Formula One track to gain insights into car performance. This includes analysis of metal particles present in oils which provide early indications of engine and gearbox wear.
Shell and Ferrari have together won more than 100 Formula One races. This season the partnership has already earned Ferrari 33 out of a possible 38 championship points.
