Lana Nahawi, a 26-year-old Palestinian student of the Dubai International Institute, has taken the coveted Young Designer Award at a ceremony marking the finale of Bride 2004 - the annual exhibition for the discerning bride-to-be and wedding day organisers.

Lana competed against 29 pre-selected entrants, from five of Dubai and Sharjah's top design colleges at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre. Participating colleges included, The Design Academy, Beams International Centre, Pearl Academy, Preston University and the Dubai International Institute.

The entries were judged against five different criteria, by judges from varying sectors of the fashion industry. All agreed that the standard of entries was extremely high.

The award was sponsored by Swarovski, the leading crystal manufacturers. Grace Ghunaim, Communications & CSC Manager at Swarovski and one of the judges explained: "We chose Lana's design because it really stood out. The design was superbly executed and was an excellent reflection of this year's 'Renaissance' theme.

"This award is so important in giving young designers in the UAE a competitive edge. At Swarovski, we believe that young designers are a great investment as they present an opportunity to create brand loyal designers for the future," said Ghunaim.

It wasn't just the kudos of winning the award that the students were competing for. Lana, the two runners-up and the winner of the innovation award were all presented with a trophy made up of Swarovski crystal components and they will have internships with leading UAE fashion houses organised for them.

"I believe that winning this award will give me the confidence to develop as a designer. When I graduate at the end of this year I hope to specialise in Pret-a-Porter. My ambition is to become a recognised Middle Eastern designer. I think Dubai offers great opportunities for young fashion hopefuls," said Lana.

The winning design was a contemporary wedding dress in cream silk with red leather straps and detail. Ferry Lee, Marketing Director, IIR Exhibitions, Dubai, the organisers of Bride 2004 said: "We believe it is crucial that young talent is encouraged and supported. Now an annual fixture, the Young Designers Award has given exposure to the growing creative ability from fashion students in the United Arab Emirates, and has helped launch careers for aspiring new designers."

Other winners on the night included; 1st Runner-Up Shahida Shuttari (Preston University), 2nd Runner-Up Munazzah Naseem (Preston University) and Innovation Award Anshu Mulchandani (Dubai International Institute).
