Samsung has applied the sophisticated nano-technology to develop a sterilizing function in its home appliances, removing 99.9 % of the two harmful microorganisms, Staphylococci and Escherichia coli.

Samsung Gulf Electronics Senior Manager Mr. Keun Sang Yoo, Senior Manager, Home Appliance Division said, "Low temperature in refrigerator retards proliferation of bacteria but cannot completely prevent it from growing. The interior of Samsung refrigerators and washing machines is now coated with nano-size silver that brings sterilization, anti bacteria and deodorization effects."

Samsung has capitalized on the properties of Silver (Ag+), a natural antibacterial and antifungal agent. Nano-technology, adopted by Samsung, has expanded the relative surface area of silver to further enhance its bactericidal and fungicidal effectiveness. Silver solution is dispersed as sub-microscopic particles that can easily penetrate cells. These silver nano particles, when in contact with bacteria, viruses and fungi, suppress respiration and adversely affect cellular metabolism, inhibiting the cell from growing.

Health concerns sparked by the SARS outbreak and other such health related challenges alerted people towards the need to suppress harmful micro-organisms Today awareness and demand for products that have virus killing capabilities rather than just eliminating bacteria and mold are on the rise especially in the refrigerator and washing machine product segments. With nano-technology, Samsung has come even closer to its consumers and aims to provide adequate health related protection.

"Innovation based on customer feedback is key to our growth worldwide; we have taken a giant leap towards maintaining our consumers' health related safety standards through nano-technology," concluded Mr. Yoo.
