Spyware threatens security of Middle East's computer users
- United Arab Emirates: Sunday, April 25 - 2004 at 12:07
- PRESS RELEASE
Many computer users are confident that their systems are protected against all potential menaces, including various types of computer malware and spam.
Spyware is a software programme that sends information about internet sessions back to the computer from which it is launched. Often built into free downloads, spyware works in the background without a user's knowledge. It is used to create marketing profiles based on surfing habits.
Spyware - which is not considered as a virus and cannot be prevented with traditional antivirus software or a firewall - is another threat to Middle East-based corporate and home computer users. "Anyone who accesses the Internet is potentially at risk," said Justin Doo, managing director of Trend Micro in the Middle East and Africa region.
Spyware is capable of recording keyboard strokes and collecting confidential information such as passwords and bank account details and gathering details on unused storage space. "All of this can be occurring with the user believing their network is secure," said Doo.
Recognising the threat and Reducing the Risk
Signs that a computer is running a spyware programme include a slow-down in processing times, a corrupted Internet browser and the appearance of a high number of pop-up screens when opening the Internet browser.
Computer users can reduce the risk of spyware infecting their systems by researching the authenticity of 'free' software (freeware) before downloading it, taking extreme care when downloading freeware, implementing anti-spyware programmes, and using firewall to help detect unauthorized programmes.
Trend Micro offers computer users in the Middle East advanced levels of privacy and spyware protection by blocking malicious programmes from accessing personal information.
Trend Micro provides regular updates to detect and remove spyware, preventing it from tracking surfing behaviours, stealing passwords or account information, and creating dangerous backdoors into computer systems.
