Sameer Khan, Vice President, Global Events - one of the three organisers of DIFA, said that the first DIFA event would take place during the 2005 Dubai Shopping Festival. 'The first DIFA awards will be open to all Hindi films that are out during the current year - that is between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2004,' Khan explained.
He added that the show would be held at a prominent venue in Dubai and one with a seating capacity suitable for a large audience. The show will be hosted by well-known actors, Johnny Lever and Paresh Raval, who are both reputed for their great comic talent, with other hosts.
'The awards night will be a show that balances tributes to tremendously talented actors and successful films, with stage performances by a host of cinematic celebrities. Some of the performers audiences can expect to see on the night are Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee, to name a few,' Khan said.
A panel of four judges will prepare the nominations for DIFA honours. Awards will be distributed in about 28 categories, including popular awards such as Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Movie, and Best Film Soundtrack and technical awards that include Best Cinematography and Best Editing.
According to Jordy Patel, Vice President, Popcorn Entertainment - a company that, along with Global Events and Foursome Production is involved with the organising of the event, an integral part of the awards will be the viewers' choice awards. 'Audiences across the Middle East will be able to send in their nomination for awards in four categories by logging on to the Global Events website: www.dubaifilmawards.com,' he said.
Suniel Shetty, one of the key people involved in the institution of DIFA and Chairman of Popcorn Entertainment, said that institution of the award is in recognition also of the fact that a large number of Hindi movie fans now reside outside India.
The show is being managed by Global Events, with Popcorn Entertainment and Foursome Production involved in the scripting, coordination and direction of the event.
Dubai Indian Film Awards launched
The first Dubai Indian Film Awards (DIFA) will be held in the emirate on January 20, 2005, promoters of the event announced yesterday.
