Biometric technology is being used increasingly by both government agencies and private companies in identity solutions, to provide security, protect personal information and reduce fraud. The UAE's National ID Project is leading initiatives all over the world to produce the first general ID card for all citizens.

"The UAE ID card programme, which will take three years from start to finish, will one of the most sophisticated of its kind," said Colonel Al Raisi. "The country's two million citizens will be able to store personal information on the cards, which will eventually be able to hold driving licenses, border control data and medical records. We look forward to unveiling the practical application of this technology to the rest of the world."
