The awards are aimed at appreciating the role of the print media in informing the readers on the various activities organised during the 10-week event.

Hind Al Falasi, Corporate Communications Coordinator, said: "The award generated a lot of interest from the print media during last year's Dubai Summer Surprises. The media coverage of the various activities was phenomenal and there were a lot of stories and photographs in the newspapers which deserved a lot of praise."

She emphasised that the 'DSS 2004 Awards for Press Contribution' is aimed at encouraging the journalists to write and the photographers to follow-up about the innovative fun events lined up during the 10-week excitement, so that the readers get a feel of the various activities.

She said that the government departments which are organising the 10 theme weeks have offered a total of Dh10000 every week. The entries for the award will be judged by the DSS Office and the Organising Committee. As part of the 'DSS 2004 Awards for Press Contribution', the Best Report in Arabic and the Best Report in English will bag Dh3500 each and the best photographer of the week will receive Dh3000.

The Journalists/Photographers do not have to apply or send entries for the award -- the DSS Media Centre will monitor all the coverage and will take into consideration all photographs/stories that have a photographer's/journalist's credit line. The winner will be announced every Sunday in the consecutive week.

Last year, the DSS awards for Press Contribution were given away to 30 winners from different publications. Some of the journalists/ photographers bagged the award more than once.
