- PRESS RELEASE
FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company, and the Dubai Police joined forces this week to promote safe driving throughout the FedEx fleet of drivers with an inter-Gulf safe driving competition.
"FedEx is committed to ensuring the safety of its drivers and packages, 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Hamdi Osman, Regional Vice President, FedEx Middle East, Indian Sub-Continent and Africa. "We were delighted to partner with the Dubai Police in such an interactive, engaging programme that highlights the importance of safe driving to all our employees."
Commencing with a written theory and driving test in each country, station champions were subsequently selected from each country and flown to Dubai to compete in the main competition, held on Tuesday, 15 June. Participants then underwent another written test and a practical on-road test that was organised and invigilated by the Dubai Police Traffic Department.
"The FedEx Middle East Safe Driving Championship, works in line with the directives of the Dubai Police General Department of Traffic in encouraging various community organisations to take part in the Dubai Police traffic safety strategy," said Brigadier Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director of Dubai General Traffic Department.
The Brigadier praised the initiative taken in organising this competition, which represents a logical extension to the 20th Gulf Traffic Police Week, themed 'Traffic Safety is the Responsibility of All'. He urged all other groups within the community to take part in supporting this vital safety message.
Alexander Germer, a FedEx courier from the Dubai hub, won the grand prize of a crystal trophy that will be displayed in his home Station. Trophies were also presented to the runners up from Kuwait, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, and certificates of appreciation were given to all 15 members of the police department who helped make the event possible.
Major Mohammed Rashid Abdullah, Director of the Traffic Information Department for Dubai Police expressed his gratitude for FedEx's initiative, calling upon other organisations and companies that employ many drivers to follow this example, emphasizing that the Dubai Police supports any initiatives that contribute to safer roads and help to reduce the volume of traffic accidents.
