"Standard Chartered is committed to working with the AGRFU to develop the game of rugby across the region," said Ray Ferguson, Chief Executive, Standard Chartered Bank UAE. "Great strides have already been made to popularise the game in the Gulf, but we have made a commitment to further develop youth rugby, which we hope will lead to more youngsters taking up the sport."

Standard Chartered is already a keen supporter of sporting events across the region, recently announcing sponsorship of this year's Dubai Marathon.

The bank is also an official partner of the Lawrence Dallaglio Benefit Year Tour, which incorporates Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong. The Dubai leg will be held in the form of a dinner at the Emirates Towers Hotel on June 28th. Lawrence Dallaglio, Jason Leonard and Will Greenwood, all members of England's 2003 Rugby World Cup winning team, will be present at the event, hosted by former England star Martin Bayfield.

The eventual aim of the tour is to raise over Dhs 6 million for charities including the Anthony Nolan Trust, the Richard Langhorn Trust, Cancer Research, the Bali Bomb Fund and the PRA Rugby Players Benevolent Fund, which assists ex-players forced out of the game through injury.

The Standard Chartered deal with the AGRFU covers the Gulf Cup, a GCC-wide competition involving teams from the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, the senior Arabian Gulf squad, which is ranked in the top six in Asia and the Under 14, 16 and 19 AGRFU teams.

"As a rugby union, the Arabian Gulf has been improving all the time," said George Grant, Secretary, AGRFU. "Now we have a sponsor with the international scale of Standard Chartered supporting us, we can continue this development. All aspects of rugby in the region will benefit, from our senior team competing against the best in Asia, to our junior teams growing in terms of size and quality."
