Sun offers standard Linux choices. Sun's global alliances with Red Hat and SUSE allow Sun to ship and support two of the most popular Linux distributions, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8.
Many ISVs have ported their applications to Linux. While many applications have also been ported to the Solaris OS (x86 Platform Edition), some commercial applications are available only on Linux, which means Linux makes sense for customers who demand that those applications run on lowcost x86 hardware.
Linux customers can choose from a wide array of x86 and AMD Opteron systems from multiple vendors. While the Solaris x86 software also runs on systems from multiple vendors, Linux currently
has broader x86 hardware support.
For customers who prefer to access and change the source code for their OS, Linux is the perfect choice. While few customers actually require this capability, it enables users to customize OS
functionality to meet their specific needs.
Along with access to source code, some customers prefer the ability to influence and contributeto the development process of their OS in order to meet specific technology and business needs.
While customer input drives the changes that Sun makes to the Solaris OS, the community development of Linux allows users to contribute directly to the process.
Linux includes failover clustering as part of the OS. In addition, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server includes a load balancer, which is ideal for Web server farms.
