Iraq's Energy Minister Ayham Al Samarrai and Ekbe Maschinenbau Deputy Chairman Bel Khorchani inked a contract in Amman, Jordan last week. The initial deal covers a 550MW and a 100MW plant with an option for a further 240MW power station.

This is the first project for Hamburg-based Ekbe Maschinenbau company with the Iraq Ministry of Energy. The US-led coalition handed over power to the new Iraq government on June 28 without reaching a target of providing Iraq with 6,500MW of power capacity.

At present Iraq has an estimated output of 4,800MW, and power black-outs for more than half-a-day are normal. Even before the war in Iraq's power capacity was insufficient to cope with demand in Baghdad, according to officials.

Most of Iraq's installed power station capacity was supplied by German manufacturers who have had a long business relationship with Iraq. The German Government strongly opposed the US-led invasion in March 2003.

News of this order may spur other German manufacturers to look for orders in Iraq where the opposition to the war was thought to be bad for post-war business.
