Exhibitors from 17 countries spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, Sub Continent and the Far East will be targeting the region's sports and leisure market which is demonstrating annual growth of 23%.

Among the countries represented at the event will be China with its first Sportex national pavilion housing nine companies. South Africa will be represented for the first time. Other exhibitors will come from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Lebanon, Pakistan, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Russia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Iran and the UAE.

"Representing a core segment population exceeding 23 million, Sportex Middle East is a unique trade show, presenting an unrivalled business opportunity to reach a prime, maturing market, with a proven and increasing participation in sports and leisure," said Mohammed Falaknaz, Vice President, International Expo-Consults (IEC), which organises the show.

"Strong market growth and positive economic indicators, coupled with an easing of commercial regulatory measures, have contributed to a climate of free enterprise and flexibility - a phase that has created new and exciting prospects for the leisure sector."

For the first time, Sportex Middle East will feature Gulf Stadia, a dedicated exhibition arena for multi-functional venues that will showcase a range of stadium related equipment.

"Gulf Stadia is a direct result of growing demand throughout the region for dedicated sporting venues," said Falaknaz.

"Major projects such as the new Sports City planned in Bahrain, Qatar's hosting of the Asian Games and Dubai Sports City, which will include a golf course and cricket, football and tennis stadiums as well as track and field circuits, are evidence of demand for state-of-the-art sports facilities."

Rapid economic development, improvements in standards of living and regional governments' commitment to promoting sports and leisure activities, have created increased demand for sporting goods and accessories in the region.

"Sports and other leisure activities play a vital role in the life of Middle East people, fuelled by an innate love of competition and outdoor activities," said Falaknaz. "This is reflected in the enthusiastic support sport receives from government and private sector sponsors. As a result, the region enjoys world class sports and leisure facilities.

"There is also an increased interest in a healthy lifestyle in the region. As a result the facilities for fitness are now considered a necessity rather than a luxury. And with increasing numbers of fitness centres and gymnasiums, hotels, resorts and furnished apartment complexes, all equipped with modern fitness and health facilities, there is a strong demand for fitness equipment and accessories. This is clearly reflected in Sportex Middle East's exhibitor and visitor profiles."

Sportex Middle East 2004 will be held from September 7-9, in Hall 4 at the DIEC. Opening times will be from 10am to 1pm and 4.30pm to 8.30pm daily, except Tuesday when the exhibition will be inaugurated at 11am. Tuesday and Wednesday are restricted to trade only. On Thursday the event will be open to the general public. Entrance is free.
