K H Kim, President, LG Electronics Middle East & Africa Operations, & Dr Maryam Mohammed Matar, Health Centre in Charge, Dubai Ladies Club, launch a series of lectures and workshops to empower National women in the UAE on important health and welfare issues.
LG, which invests heavily in community projects in the Middle East and around the world, will reach out to women in a series of five workshops at Dubai Ladies Club in Jumeirah, starting September 16.

The unique initiative was announced today by LG Electronics' Middle East and Africa President K.H Kim to highlight a renewed commitment to put people's needs and aspirations at the heart of LG's growing business.

KH. Kim said: "Most companies like to think they are different. At LG that condition is acute; we believe we are unique. In my opinion what makes us unique is the keen interest our company has in welfare of the communities in which we work. Though cause related marketing has been an area of focus for us, we believe in the need for an extensive program focusing the ladies of our region."

The company is organising a series of workshops and seminars targeting national women in the UAE on health and welfare issues. The first seminar will be held in conjunction with Dubai Ladies Club on September 16, 2004 to educate women on breast cancer.

Attending today's press conference, Dr Maryam Mohammed Matar, Health Centre in Charge at Dubai Ladies Club, will present a seminar on breast cancer awareness to a gathering of UAE National women on September 16 at the Dubai Ladies Club, and field questions on early detection and treatment.

Latest studies suggest that breast cancer is on the rise in the UAE, but it is one of the most treatable forms of cancer if spotted early. Breast cancer is the biggest killer of women worldwide, underlining the importance of proper education. Greater awareness also effectively combats needless stress and anxiety. Nine out of 10 lumps detected are not malignant.

Kim added: "Our research showed that while many women in the UAE expatriate community were adequately informed of the dangers of breast cancer and other health issues, women in the National community were less empowered, perhaps due to a lack of confidence or a perception of these problems as being highly stigmatic. This campaign in association with Dubai Ladies Club gives a very important part of our community the tools to take more control when it comes to their health and welfare."

Other topics in the five-lecture series include mother and child relations, obesity, and menopause. LG Electronics has committed to roll out the project elsewhere in the UAE and the Gulf.
