BUiD to hold lecture on bilingual voice portals

In today's Arab world, people's access to information has been transformed with the proliferation of mobile phones, the internet and computers.

Voice browsing could be the next technological revolution allowing for even easier and faster access to information. Dr. Habib Talhami, Senior Lecturer at the British University in Dubai (BUiD) will be talking about building Arabic/English voice portals at the next BUiD Open Lecture on Wednesday September 11th, 6-7pm. He will discuss the issues related to creating a bilingual (Arabic/English) voice portals in the Arab world the technology used and the development of standards that would enable the adoption of voice recognition technology.

"The Arabic language, which is a very rich language with many dialects, has always been a challenge for information technology developers," said Dr Talhami. "This talk will discuss one approach for building an Arabic/English voice portal by exploiting existing tools such as VoiceXML. Specifically, I will look at the limitations and problems Arabic poses for speech recognition and synthesis and what is required to make bilingual portals seamless."

BUiD's Open Lecture series is being held as part of the University's opening celebratory activities. A new lecture will be held every evening (except Friday) from now through September 21th. Upcoming lectures include: Quality: Process or Culture?, Imagining Techniques: From Oil-Pipe Detection to Disease Diagnosis, and Helping Teachers Improve. The lecture series, given by BUiD's academic staff of internationally experienced researchers, will feature the latest developments and research relevant to the UAE in areas such as Informatics, Project Management and Education.
