First class passengers will be able to benefit from a free return upgrade to Concorde on the London-New York-London sector. While business class passengers purchasing a Club World ticket need only to pay an additional amount to qualify for the prestigious upgrade.

The offer is valid for outbound travel until 15 June 2002.

Concorde - British Airways' flagship carrier - flies daily from London to New York and is the world's only supersonic passenger aircraft, cruising at more than twice the speed of sound at around 1350 mph. A typical New York crossing takes a little less than three and a half hours.

Commenting on the offer Judith Limburn, Country Commercial Manager for the UAE said: "2002 is an important milestone for British Airways in the region. It is the year we celebrate our 70th anniversary flying to the Middle East and Concorde's 26 year history in the Middle East. Bahrain was the first commercial destination that Concorde flew to."

"Concorde has gone through a £14m investment programme that includes new seats, new washrooms, interiors, tableware, and a new lounge at Heathrow and New York JFK, so we are delighted to offer a promotion which will allow our premium travellers to experience the comforts and services of our flagship aircraft" added Limburn

• The average flight time between London Heathrow and New York JFK is three hours and twenty minutes. A subsonic aircraft, for example, a Boeing 747, flying the same distance, averages a flight time of over seven hours.

• Concorde takes off at 250 mph, compared with 170 mph for most aircraft. It cruises at 1350 mph, compared with about 575 mph for a Boeing 747-400, at altitudes up to 60,000 feet compared with 35,000 feet for subsonic aircraft.

• More than 2.5 million passengers have flown supersonically on British Airways' Concorde since she entered commercial service in 1976. The current most frequent passenger, an oil company executive, clocks up almost 70 round trip transatlantic crossings a year.
