The ISO:9001-certified car rental operator already works with SriLankan's sister airline Emirates, and the new limousine service emphasises the synergies between the two carriers, according to chief executive officer Peter Hill.

"We are delighted to have Avis on board as one of our partners," he said. "The company has a reputation for providing a quality operation, an ambition that dovetails with the premium we place on service at SriLankan," he added.

"Our business class passengers expect the very best facilities and comforts, from the latest seat technology to fast track check-in, and with this new limousine service, they will now start their journeys with the promise of an efficient airport transfer."

SriLankan Airlines' business class service includes check-in at the Emirates' premium departures hall at Dubai International Airport, with its rapid customs and emigration facilities, plus use of the Dubai-based carrier's lounge.

Cabins have a 2-2-2 seating configuration with each seat having a 49-inch pitch, plus the latest inflight technology with seat-back screens offering a choice of movies, sport, comedy, drama, news, children's channels, games, live flight cameras plus a range of audio options. In addition, business class passengers have access to a dedicated film library with an extra choice of 34 videos, while further facilities include in-seat satellite telephones and laptop recharging.

To come is a new business class lounge at Colombo, due to be unveiled shortly.

Notes and media contacts

SriLankan Airlines was created in April 1998 when Air Lanka, was privatised following the establishment of a strategic partnership with Dubai-based Emirates Airline. The agreement saw Emirates take a 40 per cent shareholding in the company and undertake a 10-year management agreement, during which time SriLankan has been established as southern Asia's preferred international carrier.

Following its transformation, SriLankan has won a string of international aviation awards including Best Airline in Central Asia from UK's Skytrax Research for four years in a row, (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004), underlining its new reputation as a world-class carrier.

In 2003, SriLankan was voted as having the friendliest cabin crew by Skytrax, and also won the award for Best In-flight Entertainment (for a fleet size of 20 or less) at the annual World Airline Entertainment Association's Avion awards in the USA.
