Differentiation the key to retail success in Dubai says Dubai Festival City Director at MAPIC

  • United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, November 17 - 2004 at 10:15
  • PRESS RELEASE

Speaking at MAPIC, the international exhibition for retail real estate being held in Cannes, France; Phil McArthur, the Director of Marketing and Leasing at Dubai Festival City told delegates of the importance of differentiation in Dubai's current burgeoning retail climate.

McArthur also spoke of the emergence of a new retailing concept in Dubai - a shopping centre which fuses many elements that will be significant to the emirate's retail market.

"The addition of leisure aspects to regional super-centres is taking the retail landscape to a new level and we are beginning to see the emergence of a different kind of experience, tailored to a more demanding and expectant market. It's a fusion of hospitality, leisure, lifestyle, retail and entertainment. Somewhere you desire to go to and not just have to go to," said McArthur.

MAPIC 2004 is currently underway in the French Riviera city of Cannes and will run until 19th November 2004. Phil McArthur is part of the six-strong team representing Dubai Festival City's 2 million square feet retail destination - The Festival Centre.

The Festival Centre will house over 450 shops and services and more than 100 restaurants and cafes featuring some of the best brands from around the globe. The first phase of development will house retail outlets offering household and convenience goods, including the UAE's flagship IKEA store.

"The Festival Centre will be at the edge of a new wave of shopping destinations that house lifestyle, hospitality, retail and entertainment outlets. It is beyond a retail centre, it is tailored to a more demanding and expectant market," McArthur told delegates.

"Dubai Festival City is pioneering the new retailing concept which will be the next wave in shopping centres. Generating the all important critical mass that secures strong brands and develops high levels of traffic, the Festival Centre will ensure Dubai's retail boom continues to echo for years to come."

About Dubai Festival City:
Dubai Festival City is being developed on 1,600 acres on the banks of Dubai's historic Creek. Comprising 15 distinct development zones, Dubai Festival City is a property development by the Al-Futtaim Group and is the Middle East's largest, privately-funded, mixed-use, real estate project.

It will comprise a unique mix of entertainment, dining, shopping, edutainment, sport and leisure facilities, automotive dealerships, hotels, a marina, residential and office components.

The first phase of construction is underway with The Al Badia Golf Resort, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by world-renowned golf course designer Robert Trent Jones II LLC, surrounded by Mediterranean style apartments and town homes, set to open in late 2004.

Its centreplace Festival Centre, the 1,900,000 square foot retail, dining and entertainment centre, set on a Creekside marina, is also under construction. Foundation work will also soon start on the InterContinental Hotel Dubai Festival City, an iconic convention hotel situated on the north-west peninsula of the marina.

The recently announced Four Seasons Hotel Dubai is the latest addition to Dubai Festival City. With an initial development cost estimated at Dhs. 700 Million, the Four Seasons Hotel Dubai will have 250 rooms and villas, a destination spa, five restaurants and a range of conference and banqueting facilities. The hotel is scheduled to open at the end of 2006.
