Wataniya, Ericsson sign off on national network upgrade

Wataniya Telecom, Kuwait's leading mobile network operator, has signed an agreement with Ericsson to implement a network-wide upgrade to the company's GSM infrastructure that will support a new level of high-speed value added services for Wataniya's customers.

The agreement was signed between Wataniya vice-chairman His Excellency Sheikh Khaled Al Yousef Al Sabah and Bo Nilsson, Vice President and general manager of Ericsson in the Middle East.

"This agreement paves the way for a new generation of faster, more performant and dynamic services from Wataniya, and will consolidate our reputation as a leader in providing the latest and most innovative services to our customers," said Sheikh Khaled.

The agreement will see the majority of Wataniya's advanced services infrastructure being upgraded to deliver world-leading high speed access that will support next generation video streaming, data access and services. "Our customers have already embraced value added services in tremendous numbers, registering the highest uptake and usage of these services in our region. The demand is clearly strong and we're moving to ensure that we will be able to support even further services of this type moving forward," said Wataniya Telecom CEO Harri Koponen.

The network upgrade will build Wataniya's capabilities 'up to and beyond EDGE' according to Ericsson's Bo Nilsson. The upgrade implementation will take place immediately.

"Wataniya Telecom has set the standard for advanced services in the Middle East and we're proud to be working with them on taking this platform to new levels of performance and capability. This move will see Wataniya offering the facilities of one of the world's most advanced GSM networks to its customers."
