Emirates rolls out Mauritius roadshows in the Middle East

  • United Arab Emirates: Saturday, December 04 - 2004 at 16:51
  • PRESS RELEASE

At a road show for travel agents here today, Emirates Holidays, the largest wholesale tour operator in the Middle East, launched top-value, special winter packages to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

The five-country road show, held jointly with the Mauritius Ministry of Tourism, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) and Marriott International, is part of a long-term campaign by the Emirates Group to promote travel to Mauritius from throughout the Middle East.

After Dubai, the road show will visit Amman tomorrow, Cairo (6 December), Beirut (8 December) and Kuwait (9 December). In each city the program includes presentations to the travel trade and the media about Mauritius' attractions. The cities were carefully selected for their strong growth potential for travel to the island.

The Mauritian delegation is headed by the Hon. Anil Kumar Singh Gayan, Minister of Tourism and Leisure, supported by Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director MTPA and other members of the Mauritian government.

At the Dubai event, Emirates was represented by John Felix, Vice President Emirates Holidays; Salem Obaidalla, Emirates' Manager U.A.E.; and Khadim Al Shamsi, Emirates' Area Manager Mauritius.

Commenting on the occasion, Minister Gayan said: "Business and tourism links between Mauritius and the UAE are already strong, with trade volumes reaching more than US$ 7.3 million last year. The relationship just got closer, when Mauritius announced its participation in the 19th International Autumn Trade Fair (IATF) 2004 to be held in Dubai in less than two weeks, from the 12th to the 16th."

He added: "I believe that the joint initiative by the Mauritius government and Emirates to enhance awareness of our beautiful island country in the Middle East will reinforce our partnership even more."

Dr Mootoosamy said: "Mauritius is the perfect holiday destination with its dazzling blue ocean, white sand beaches, towering mountains, world class resorts, casinos and spas. Holiday makers from the Middle East will discover Mauritius to be an idyllic haven away from the frenetic pace of city life."

The Mauritius resorts carefully selected by Emirates Holidays for its special winter packages include the Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa, The Oberoi Mauritius, Trou Aux Biches, Sugar Beach and Le Coco Beach. The resorts are in demand as locations for exotic weddings in addition to their popularity with honeymooners. A range of superb facilities caters to clients looking for sports on land and sea, dining and entertainment or who want to simply soak up the sun.

John Felix said: "Emirates is honoured to join the Mauritius Ministry of Tourism and MTPA in this campaign. The Middle East is one of the most significant markets for Mauritius, with a sizeable proportion of our passengers that fly there originating from the region. This road show and other initiatives are examples of the catalytic role played by Emirates in developing the tourism links between the Middle East and the paradise island."

He added: "The Emirates Holidays' winter specials offer Middle East travellers great value getaways to hotels ranging from the luxurious to the pleasantly informal and affordable, from now through to the end of February 2005. Some offers are even extended until 21st March 2005."

Emirates Holidays already promotes Mauritius through its 22 offices throughout the airline's Middle East network. Its World of Choice travel brochure includes a rich 41-page mix of flexible, affordable and high-value holiday packages to Mauritius for families, honeymooners and up-market travellers.

Increased demand from Middle East travellers prompted Emirates to recently introduce a First Class service on its Mauritius service and replace the two-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft, used on the route since the start of services, with the larger capacity, three-class Boeing 777-200.

Currently, Emirates operates four non-stop flights per week from Dubai to Mauritius. Outbound flight EK701 departs Dubai every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 02:20hrs, arriving in Mauritius the same morning at 08:55hrs. Return flight EK702 operates on the same days, departing Mauritius at 23:20hrs and touching down in Dubai the next morning at 05:55hrs.

About Emirates
Since its launch in 1985, Emirates Airline has received more than 250 international awards in recognition of its efforts to provide unsurpassed levels of customer service.

The airline has experienced rapid and consistent growth, above 20 per cent a year on average and has been profitable for the last 17 years. Financially self-sustained and unprotected, Emirates carried 10.4 million passengers in the 2003-04 financial year - almost two million more than the year before - and declared a record US$ 429 million profit, an increase of 73.5 per cent over the previous year, on revenue of US $3.6 billion - nearly US$1 billion more, or 37 per cent better than the year before.

Emirates is the world's fastest-growing intercontinental airline, one of the world's five most profitable and among the 20 largest ones. It is based in Dubai, one of the few cities in the world that pursues an open-skies policy, with more than 110 airlines in free and fair competition.

Its 71 all wide-bodied fleet includes six Boeing 747 freighters and is among the youngest in the skies, with an average age of 46 months. The airline plans to more than double its size by 2012.

Emirates announced the largest order in commercial aviation history at the 2003 Paris Air Show, when it added 71 new Airbus and Boeing aircraft worth US$19 billion to its order book, which now stands at nearly 100 aircraft worth US$30 billion. The airline was the launch carrier for the new ultra long-haul A340-500, which started service on 1 December 2003 on the Sydney route.

It also was the first airline to order the revolutionary A380-800 double-decker and will be the main launch carrier for the innovative A340-600 HGW. With 45 A380s on order, which it will start receiving in 2006, Emirates is the largest customer of the yet-to-fly Airbus super-jumbo.

Emirates operates services to 77 cities in 54 countries in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, Indian subcontinent and Asia-Pacific. Since January it has begun services to Lagos, Accra, Glasgow, Shanghai, Budapest (cargo only), Vienna, New York and Christchurch. In 2005, the airline will launch services to the Seychelles, Seoul, Geneva and Hamburg.

Emirates has entered into codeshare agreements with the following airlines: Air India, Air Mauritius, Continental Airlines, Japan Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, South African Airways, SriLankan Airlines, and Thai Airways.

Emirates Airline includes Emirates SkyCargo and Destination & Leisure Management (D&LM), which manages Emirates Holidays, Arabian Adventures and Al Maha Desert Resort. The airline is part of the Emirates Group, which also includes associate companies Dnata, Mercator, Transguard and Galileo.
