The socioeconomic implications of these statistics are a critical cause for concern in the United Arab Emirates, where it is estimated that in 2003, there were 7,397 serious traffic accidents resulting in 873 deaths and over 10,000 injuries.

Recognizing the need for a stronger emphasis on road safety in the UAE, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. (NYSE:DTG) has developed a three-step process to ensure the safety of its customers.

"Synonymous with affordable, reliable cars and unparalleled service, DTAG remains committed to maintaining safer roads here in the UAE and delivering a dependable and enjoyable rental experience for all our customers," said Sam Eltibi, regional director, MENA, Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group.

The first step in the process is the professional maintenance of the local fleet. Each vehicle goes through a lengthy and extensive quality control check before it is rented out to customers.

"All the vehicle's major systems are thoroughly checked, including braking, heating and cooling, electrical and ignition, emission control, fuel, and steering and suspension. The maintenance of vehicle components such as tires, windshield wipers, lights, and the vehicle's body, is also conducted," said ElTibi.

The second step involves educating the customer before the rental vehicle is handed over to them. Every customer is instructed to adhere to the fundamental safety guidelines contained in their car rental agreement, including not driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance, allowing an unauthorized personal to drive the vehicle, leaving the windows, doors or trunk unlocked, or leaving the keys in the ignition when parked.

The final step is in the event of an accident. "Accidents aren't pleasant but they can happen even to the most careful driver. In case of emergencies, customers can now call 800-THRIFTY, our 24-hour toll free number, and access their nearest Thrifty outlet in the UAE and help will be on the way," added ElTibi.

"As a world-renowned brand, DTG recognises its responsibility to the regional community. Our three-step process is just the beginning of a number of road safety initiatives planned in the UAE and throughout the region," he concluded.
The Thrifty Car Rental brand has already won strong market share through its network of franchisees in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Dollar Rent a Car has also opened in strategic locations in Dubai and Bahrain over the past three months and expansion plans are well underway to expand throughout the UAE and Middle East. Dollar's fleet of cars in the UAE is also expected to more than double to 350 before the end of the year.
