Dubai Marine Workshop in anti terrorism joint venture

Anti-terrorist marine barriers that can protect ships and ports from attack will be introduced across the region by a joint venture between Dubai's United Arab Shipping Marine Workshop (UASMW) and Indian manufacturer, Hi-Tech Elastomers.

Announcing the deal at Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2004, the region's premier maritime exhibition and conference, UASMW General Manager, Ahmad Alibinsalem Alzaabi, said: "These barriers can be as high as 3.9 metres above water level and are custom designed to meet specific requirements. They can be equipped with underwater cameras or special features for surveillance of any unauthorized underwater entry as well as to monitor and patrol the territory."

He said the barriers offer vital security for both ships, ports, marinas and offshore installations. The deal with Hi-Tech Elastomers, who developed the security system, gives UASMW exclusive regional installation and maintenance rights for the product."

UASMW is a subsidiary of Kuwait headquartered United Arab Shipping Co.

Alzaabi told visitors at Seatrade that UASMW had grown from working exclusively for its parent to an organisation offering a complete range of services to the maritime industry with a commitment to becoming the largest Middle East ship repair business.

Seatrade is almost triple the size of last year's show with more than 200 exhibitors from 30 countries and industry pavilions from Iran, Turkey, India, Pakistan and Holland. Conference delegate bookings are over 330, with visitors from more than 40 countries.

Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2004 is being held under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister. The event is sponsored by Dubai Maritime City; Dubai Ports Authority; Government of Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing; Gulf Energy Maritime PJSC (GEM); and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL).
