- United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, December 07 - 2004 at 17:02
- PRESS RELEASE
Ernst & Young has launched a Middle East Hotel Benchmark Survey that gives an insight into the performance and trends of the fast-developing hospitality sector in the region.
The survey findings show that hotels in key regional markets have achieved high occupancy levels in the first nine months of this year - with properties in Dubai recording the highest at 88 percent in 2004, an increase of 10.8 percentage points from last year.
Saudi Arabia has shown mixed results with hotels in Jeddah, Madina and Makkah doing considerably well compared to those in Riyadh, where hotels recorded an 11 percentage point decrease in occupancy levels in the first nine months of 2004 over the corresponding period last year. For September alone, occupancy levels in Riyadh
properties slumped to 57.5 percent from 69.2 percent in September 2003.
The survey has found that in cities like Doha, Dubai, Beirut, Muscat and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, hotels made substantial gains in average room rate in the first nine months of 2004, while properties in the Saudi Arabian cities of Madina, Makkah and Riyadh saw a decline in this category. Doha properties posted the highest increase in average room rates during the period of January-September with 18.4 percent compared to the same period last year. While Dubai achieved an increase of 15.9 percent, in Beirut average room rates rose by 13.1 percent and in Sharm El Sheikh they went up by 9.2 percent. Properties in Madinah, Makkah and Riyadh registered a decline in the average room rate with the figures falling by 8.0, 7.7 and 4.7 percent respectively.
