- United Arab Emirates: Saturday, December 18 - 2004 at 15:25
- PRESS RELEASE
The Internet emerged in the 1960's as a result of some visionary thinking by experts who saw great potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields.
On Sunday 19th December, Dr Henry S Thompson from The University of Edunburgh in the UK will give a lecture entitled, 'The future of the Internet'. The lecture will open with an overview of the origins and history of the Internet and will then move on to a discussion of current issues and predictions for the future.
Commenting on the lecture Dr Thompson said, "The internet is over 30 years old, and the World Wide Web about half of that. In a relatively short period of time, this technology has revolutionised the way we access information, conduct business and interact with each other. As technology has developed, the internet has become more accessible, making it easier for non-technical people to use and throughout the talk I will pay particular attention to the Impact of the Internet and the Web on everyday life."
Dr Henry Thompson is Reader in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science at the University of Edinburgh and has been using the Internet and the Web from their beginnings. As a member of the World Wide Web Consortium Team (W3C) he has also played a leading role in the development of many Web standards. His research, experience and commitment to the Internet and the Web will provide fascinating insight into the subject.
This lecture is the latest in a successful series hosted by BUiD lecturers and Professors from its partner universities. The lecture is free and open to members of the general public.
Dr. Thompson's lecture will be held at BUiD's Knowledge Village Campus (Building 17) at 6pm.
