U.S. Robotics firewall protects business and home Internet users with new web content filtering capability

  • United Arab Emirates: Monday, December 20 - 2004 at 15:48
  • PRESS RELEASE

U.S. Robotics, the leading provider of Internet and connectivity solutions, is providing even more protection for business and home Internet users with the addition of content filtering, powered by SurfControl, to its multi-function firewall/VPN/NAS device (USR 8200).

The Web content filtering capability provides an extensive array of simple to use tools to protect homes and businesses from the online risks associated with Internet content. Existing customers can upgrade by simply accessing the Firmware Upgrade tab on the USR 8200's Web-based management console.

"SurfControl helps 'stop unwanted content' for business and home Internet users," says Nick Lamidey, SurfControl's Director of OEM Partnerships. "With U.S. Robotics USR 8200 multi-function firewall/VPN device, networks and sensitive data are protected from uninvited guests and hackers. Our complete Web filtering service combined with the USR 8200 provides an affordable, flexible and ideal foundation for any small office or home network."

The additional filtering tools provided by SurfControl deliver the best in network security and complement the existing extensive security features on the USR 8200. SurfControl's 40 filter categories deliver the desired amount of filtering with the U.S. Robotics multi-function firewall/VPN device providing the easy to use controls to protect an entire network.
"Solutions that offer hundreds of categories to manage filtering often have a complex interface, which can be too difficult to use," says Tony Field, Product Manager EMEA U.S. Robotics. "U.S. Robotics and SurfControl provide a simple 'point and click' interface, which parents and employers can use to protect their networks and prevent access to undesirable Web sites."

This latest upgrade for the USR 8200 also implements print server functionality, taking advantage of the firewall's USB 2.0 ports. Now, in addition to using the FireWire and USB Ports and integrated File/FTP Server capability for attaching external storage drives for network attached storage, the USB Ports can be used to make any USB printer into a networked printer. Add one of the newly available U.S. Robotics' 120GB or 250GB USB 2.0 + FireWire Storage Drives and the USR 8200 becomes the core of a home or small business network.

According to Daryle Brown, Product Marketing Manager, U.S. Robotics, "The USR 8200 Firewall is the best value in security appliances on the market today, offering the most extensive range of protection, capabilities and benefits. We've continued to round out our product portfolio with a top-to-bottom selection of business-class wired and wireless networking, security and accessory devices designed for the home or office—without compromising budget."

The U.S. Robotics' USR 8200 multi-function firewall/VPN device is available now from retail outlets like Quality Computers, Advanced Business Computers, CompuME, Etech (Kuwait), Dimension 4 (Pakistan), amongst others in the Middle East, at a suggested retail price of US$ 299/-. A 30-day free trial of the Web Filtering Service, powered by SurfControl will be included in every purchase of USR 8200. The first 10 requests received by U.S. Robotics from corporate organizations in the GCC region will win early bird demo units of the USR 8200 with Web Filtering Service.
