5.1% is share of wholesale and retail trade sector in economy's GDP

Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) regularly conducts a comprehensive annual economic surveys to collect aggregate and detailed data on the different types of economic activities practiced in the country. The surveys are prepared following international recommendations, concepts, and definitions.
The results of the 2012 Survey of Wholesale and Retail trade will be released through the 24th issue of the publication, 'Annual Bulletin of Wholesale and Retail trade Statistics, 2011'. A highlight of the key results of the survey is provided in this press release.
A total of 8784 establishments were covered, of which 1206 (14%) are large establishments, defined as those employing 10 or more employees. These were fully covered in the survey. The total number of employees in the wholesale and retail activities reached 123 977 persons of whom 97 847 (79%) were employed by large establishments; their annual wages amounted to QR5bn.
The remaining 21% were employed by small establishments. Their annual wages amounted to QR892m. The majority of the workers in the wholesale and retail sector (98.4%) were non-Qataris.
The total production reached QR32.1bn, with an increase of 10.7% compared with the preceding year. The gross value added (GVA) generated reached QR27.8bn, representing 5.1% of Qatar economy GDP. The net value added (after eliminating depreciation) amounted to QR26bn.
Gross value added (GVA) per employee was 224 thousand QR, showing an annual increase of 21%. The percentage of intermediate goods to gross output was 2.6%, while the percentage of intermediate services to gross output was 10.9%.
