Schroeder last visited the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt in October 2003. In Riyadh he met both King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah, in Abu Dhabi the late UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and in Dubai Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
Jointly with Siemens Chairman Heinrich von Pierer, the Chancellor also opened the new Siemens headquarters in Dubai and attended a round table discussion at Dubai Media City.
In the Oasis of Liwa, he dedicated a well developed in cooperation with German specialists that will be crucial for the country's water supply in the future.
The programme for his 2005 Gulf visit will be eagerly awaited in diplomatic and business circles.
