Syria to wean off oil dependency

Syria may record a budget deficit by 2014 unless it diversifies its economy from its ever diminishing supplies of oil, according to the Director of the Syrian Planning Authority, Abdullah Al-Dardari, as reported in Kuna. Imports of energy will surpass exports in 2005 and studies have shown that oil production will start falling by 2012. Syria's GDP has been declining since 1990.
