US back in Libya

Libya has awarded its first contracts to US companies in 18 years by granting oil and gas exploration licences to three American firms. US bid winners Occidental Petroleum, Amerada Hess and ChevronTexaco were among more than 120 companies who registered bids or expressed interests on the offers. Libya produces about 1.6 mbd of crude and hopes to raise this to 2.1m bpd by the end of the decade.
