  • United Arab Emirates: Saturday, February 12 - 2005 at 12:18
  • PRESS RELEASE

Cancer could strike anyone regardless of age, sex or race.

More than 10 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. It is estimated that there will be 15 million new cases every year by 2020. Cancer causes 6 million deaths every year—or 12% of deaths worldwide.

In response to such intense global interest in the area, this year's Arab Health exhibition and conference will host a number of leading experts on the treatment of cancer and cancer-related diseases.

Among the speakers at the dedicated Oncology conference will be a number of specialists from Singapore, one of the countries leading the way in the battle against the disease.

"We have seen an increasing number of people from the Middle East coming to Singapore for diagnoses and treatment for a range of cancers," said Goh Tyrone, general manager, Gulf, National Health Group (NHG). "They opt for Singapore as they are attracted by the facilities and skilled medical practitioners available here."

Recognized worldwide for their expertise in clinical services, trials and a broad range of research projects, SingHealth's National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS),NHG's The Cancer Institute (TCI), and Parkway Group Healthcare's (PGH) Cancer Centers continue to improve patients' lives.

Since its set up in 1999, SingHealth's NCCS has conducted clinical, basic and innovative research and has also developed public education programs wholly directed at the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Cancer patients and their families from the Middle East seeking treatment also benefit from a range of dedicated international patient services offered by hospitals in the country, which take into account religious and cultural sensitivities. Many provide Arabic interpreters, Halal meals and arrange transport and accommodation for families. NHG has also recently hired an Arabic speaking nurse for their Middle Eastern patients.

NHG's TCI was established in 2000 to provide comprehensive cancer management programs - from prevention to recovery and long-term health maintenance. Along with a cancer centre of excellence, NHG runs a cancer center jointly with Johns Hopkins hospital. PGH's Cancer Centres are among the few cancer centres in Asia with the capability to perform bone marrow transplants for patients who suffer from leukaemia.
