  • PRESS RELEASE

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates Group, signed a deal with Mr Michael Woodward, Chairman of Routes, to host Routes, The 12th World Route Development Forum, in Dubai in 2006.

HH Sheikh Ahmed commented: "It is our privilege and pleasure to host this event. It is fitting that the Routes Forum should come to Dubai. The outstanding growth that Dubai has witnessed over the past ten years and the projected growth of not only the population but visitors has confirmed Dubai as the regional business and leisure destination.. Dubai International Airport over the years has grown phenomenally. From a transit stop in the early 70s to a destination in its own right, Dubai is now recognised as a major hub, not just in the region but internationally. Today we have 107 airlines connecting to 160 destinations; 21.7 million passengers in 2004; and are one of the fastest growing airports in the world."

Routes primarily a networking forum, is the annual gathering of top airline route industry development personnel and airport marketing officials. It attracts key air service and route development decision makers.

It has grown from 100 delegates at the first Routes Forum in Cannes 1995 to an expected 1600 for Routes 2006 in Dubai and has become the most important event of its kind. Routes provides the ideal opportunity for airline route decision makers and airport business development and marketing officials to meet each other and develop their mutual markets.

The 2004 event was held in Madrid where delegates participated in approximately 10,000 meetings over the three days. In 2005 the event will be held in Copenhagen. Over the years, Routes has been held in various cities such as London, Dublin, Oslo, Amsterdam and Athens among others.

The Department of Civil Aviation Dubai, which is the administrative body overseeing the management of Dubai International Airport, will be the Host of the 2006 event, while Emirates will be the official carrier. They have been a regular participant at the Routes Forum for eight years, and have won seven airport marketing awards. DCA has been the main player in getting Routes to Dubai.

Key aviation bodies including IATA, ICAO, PATA, WTO and ELFAA are supporters of the Routes Forum.
