This was announced today at a press conference at Dubai Municipality in the presence of senior officials of both the civic bodies.

Dubai Municipality was represented by Obeid Salem Al Shamsi, Assistant Director General for Administrative and General Services Affairs and Abdul Aziz Malik, Director of Public Transport Department, while Abu Dhabi Municipality was represented by Mohammed Mubarak Al Marar, Director of Public Transport Department, Saeed Mohammed Al Hamili, Deputy Director of Public Transport Department and Ali Hussain, Head of Marketing and Planning Section.

Al Shamsi said the new service is considered to be the fruit of co-operation between the two municipalities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. "Both the civic bodies contributed towards it fully by proving all the requirements for the service including manpower, air-conditioned luxury coaches and complete amenities for operating the service as the officials at both the municipalities were keen to provide a safe, economic, comfortable and eco-friendly means of transport between different emirates of the country," he said.

Al Shamsi said the officials took into consideration the entire traffic, economic and environmental aspects encompassing the operations of transporting passengers through road networks that connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi in particular and other emirates of the country in general.

Al Shamsi said this route embodies the increased care that the UAE is providing the transport sector considering that it is one of the most important urban solutions for the problems resulting from the steady and intense growth of population and the use of private small vehicles, a problem that is faced by most of the nations in the world today.

He said the concerned officials and experts in Abu Dhabi and Dubai municipalities held a number of meetings and conducted necessary studies aimed at designing the service and preparing a working plan by dividing the responsibilities between the two sides.

Al Shamsi thanked the concerned officials and experts in both the civic bodies for their earnest efforts in accomplishing this important project and called for increased efforts for further enhancing the public transport sector and realizing the objectives of the country.

Malik said the new service will start from the main bus station in Abu Dhabi and ply through Sheikh Rashid road, Sheikh Zayed road passing through Umm Al Nar, Al Shahama and Al Samha stations and Dubai World Trade Centre intersection and halt at Al Ghubaibah bus station in Dubai. The service will take the same route on its return trip to Abu Dhabi and the passengers are able to get down at the stations on the way or reach Abu Dhabi directly, he said.

The coaches will take two hours to run the 150km long route. The first bus will leave Al Ghubaibah station at 6am and the last one will leave the station at 9pm. The first bus from Abu Dhabi main bus station will start at 6.30am and the last bus will leave the station at 9.30pm. Services from each station will be operated at a frequency of 45 minutes and additional coaches will be put on service as per demand increases in the future.

Excerpts from the speech of Obeid Salem Al Shamsi, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Administrative and General Services Affairs:

With the opening of this new bus service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi from 15th March we are entering a new and advanced stage of public transport in the UAE. I hope this network will further develop in the near future and cover all the emirates of the UAE.

This route is aimed at offering high quality service with excellent coaches according to a time schedule with moderate rates for those passengers who frequent between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This comes as part of the concerted efforts to expand the means of public transport in the UAE and popularizing it as an urban concept in the society.

The Public Transport has become a necessity in our modern world in the light of the economic, environmental and demographic conditions and the issue of traffic safety has become a focus in all the countries of the world. Therefore, the concerned officials in this sector in the country have given great importance to address this issue by constructing modern road networks and other advanced amenities as well as applying a number of systems and world class standards in this field.

The officials have also shown keenness to play an effective role in enhancing the image of the country's public transport sector regionally and globally as regards the expertise and experiences available here. This is being accomplished by a number of conferences and meetings where officials and experts from around the country present their view points such as in the conferences of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and in other countries, which are members of the UITP and other organizations in this sector. The last among those meetings was the Environment and Transport Conference held at Abu Dhabi and the UITP Regional Business Forum held at Dubai in the beginning of this year. As a result of this, Dubai has been chosen as the permanent regional headquarters of UITP in the Middle East and North Africa region. One of our countrymen was selected to head the UITP Regional Committee, which is considered to be an honour for the UAE.

Excerpts from the speech of Mohammed Mubarak Al Marar, Director of Public Transport Department, Abu Dhabi Municipality:

This project, which was taken up under the supervision of officials from both the municipalities as a step towards enhancing the policy of developing the public transport sector in the country, is in concurrence with the requirements of the human, economic and tourism growth of the country.

The main aim of this project is to accomplish regulated and well-planned passenger flow to ensure easy transport movement for those who frequent on this route taking into consideration the importance of public safety and reducing pressure on the road networks.

It will also reduce the huge number of different means of transport and will contribute effectively in the growth of economic and tourism movement in addition to focusing on offering excellent services in this field whether it is regarding variety or standard.

It will also ensure constant development and help reach world standards to coincide with the phase of development in the construction and services fields that is being witnessed by the country.
