A record 6.25 million tonnes of general cargo handled by Dubai Ports in 2004

Dubai Ports Authority (DPA) has announced that they handled 6.25 million tonnes of general cargo in 2004, achieving a commendable growth rate of 20 per cent.

The annual statistics released by DPA indicate that the total general cargo tonnage from January to December 2004, increased to 6.259 million tonnes, marking a rise of 1.035 million tonnes compared to 2003. Goods brought in through Dubai Ports comprise 81 per cent of the total tonnage, which amounted to 5.088 million tonnes in 2004, marking a growth of 27 per cent. Exports represented 14 per cent of the total tonnage amounting to 869 thousand tonnes in 2004, marking a growth of 12 per cent compared to the same period in 2003.

Jamal Majid bin Thaniah, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Ports Authority said, "The past year has been extremely successful for us, and our achievements are proof of this. Dubai Ports is now one of the most advanced ports in the world, with constantly improving infrastructure facilities and other support services. The major expansion activities currently in progress have significantly enhanced our handling capacity. Over the years we have been able to build a strong, mutually supportive relationship with all our customers."

"DPA's development master plan focuses on acquiring more equipment and expanding facilities at the port, to enable high quality service to customers while maintaining international standards," added Bin Thaniah.

"DPA constantly strives to achieve new standards of performance and quality of service. This forms the core of all our plans and policies aimed at developing DPA, and strengthening its position as one of the leading ports in the world," concluded Bin Thaniah.
