More than 50 delegates had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers who explained various aspects of migration, support and issues relating to cost, ownership and return on investment that open source offers.

Demonstration PCs running Suse Linux and other open source programs were on display for delegates to try out.

Linux is an open-source operating system derived from the Unix operating system. It is used most commonly to run servers. Linux is free, secure, reliable and therefore has won popularity in the business community and among commercial application developers.

According to Christian Kroker, Managing Director of enigmatis, 'Abu Dhabi is home to the largest commercial organisations in the Middle East and we felt that it is important to create greater awareness about open source and Linux. The success of the event was a testimony to the growing interest in Linux and open source in the Middle East region.'

Abdulsalam Al Marri, a delegate from the Department of Health and Medical Services said: 'The Linux in Business event enhanced my belief in the knowledge and professional skills available in the region for solutions offered and for Linux as an option.'

Enigmatis is currently finalising plans to host Linux in Business events in Qatar, Bahrain, Muscat and Syria.
